The Watcher faced the Judge and found himself staring down the barrel of a gun. Her .44 Magnum was now pointed at the Watcher’s head, the gun trembling in her hand. She trembled not from fear, but from rage.

The Watcher, and now this unseen Stranger, dared to defy her Authority, defile her System and deny her undeniable truth. Ranks of Survivors, still lined up to watch the execution, began to whisper again. Montel’s face was pale, sick, but both the Sentinels held their armed positions at the pillories. The Judge was indignant.

“It matters not. You are guilty. You cannot be anything but guilty, and you will never be anything but guilty,” she snarled, vindictive, her scaly bronze skin slick with sweat.

“Submit.” The Watcher held his shotgun steady, and with his free hand tipped back his hat to look her full in the eyes, defiant and unflinching. The Judge raised her voice. “I am tired of this game.”

She cocked the hammer.

The Watcher could see everything slow down to a split second in time. The cylinder on the Judge’s magnum rotated, lazily, smoothly. Out past the berm, a sparrow hawk cried out. The lowering sun was a golden fire in the bluest of Texas skies...

The Watcher raised the shotgun to his shoulder.
